If you have ever thought of getting a makeover, you probably imagine yourself with perfect hair, perfect makeup and a wardrobe that would shame a Hollywood actress. You have probably also watched TV shows that are dedicated to helping people transform themselves. Dr. Oz, Oprah and others seem to offer makeover segments on their shows with great regularity and you have probably been amazed at how the most ordinary people can become head-turners with the right clothes and the services of a number of experts.
Here is the thing, though – have you ever thought about what people notice first about you? It isn’t your hair, clothes or makeup. It is,quite simply, your smile. With that said, if we are to be totally honest, a perfect smile is not going to turn you into a model or a movie start. However, if your jawbone is healthy and your teeth are generally stable, cosmetic dentistry can give you a smile that will improve your appearance and your self-confidence.
A smile makeover is simply a procedure, or a combination of procedures, to give you a better smile. Treatments could include implants, veneers, bonding, or even something as simple as a whitening treatment.
A smile makeover is not a reconstruction – reconstructive dentistry serves the purpose of restoring functionality to your mouth. A smile makeover just makes you look better. However, some cosmetic treatments also have restorative benefits. Dental crowns, to use one example, can dramatically improve your appearance. They can also make it easier for you to bite and chew. If the main purpose of the crowns is to improve functionality, then the treatment is restorative and the improved appearance is secondary. Conversely, if the purpose is to make you look better, the treatment is cosmetic and part of a smile makeover.
So, the difference between a makeover and a reconstruction is that with a reconstruction, you don’t have much choice – you have to have it done in order to use your teeth effectively. A smile makeover is purely elective.
A smile makeover can correct a multitude of issues. Perhaps you have missing teeth, in which you could benefit from crowns, dentures or implants. If your teeth are gapped, crooked or overlapping, braces could be the solution. If you have lost bone volume in your face due to aging, you could benefit from maxillofacial surgery. And if your teeth are discolored, a whitening treatment can provide significant benefits. The treatments, and the benefits thereof, will depend on what you want to improve.
The longevity of your smile makeover will depend on the type of treatment involved and how well you take care of your teeth post-treatment. Generally speaking, if you brush and floss regularly and see Dr. Schlesinger for regular checkups, you can expect most cosmetic treatments to last for a long time.
