Upper East Side Dentures Specialist

denturesPeople can lose their teeth due to any number of reasons. Decay, gum disease and injury come immediately to mind. Regardless of how you lost your teeth though, you will end up with certain problems because of the loss. For one thing, you will probably find it difficult to eat the foods you enjoy – who doesn’t love a nice, thick steak, a juicy apple or a mouthful of sweet taffy? For many people though, the loss of function is less troubling than the effect on their appearance. However, dentures are one solution that is available. If you are missing a mouth full of teeth, you are likely a good candidate for dentures.

There are, fortunately, treatments available to restore your smile. The best choice is usually dental implants, since they look and work exactly like a good set of natural teeth. However, they are not the answer for everyone. In rare instances, medical conditions can make implants impossible. Usually, though, it is a matter of practicality – insurance companies will not cover implants unless they are proven to be essential, and realistically, although they are the best choice, they are hardly ever essential.

 The Procedure and the Benefits

When implants cannot be considered, for whatever reason, dentures are the next best thing. Dentures are artificial teeth that are constructed to fit over the bony ridge of your jaw, and when they are properly manufactured and properly fitted, they will function very much like your original teeth. Dentures have many pros and cons. You have almost certainly heard older relatives tell those “It’s funny now, but not so much back then” stories about dentures slipping or falling out and causing horrible embarrassment. These are tales from the past – modern denturesdentures fit very well and are highly unlikely to slip or come loose. This is because modern imaging techniques and current ways of taking impressions allow remarkably stable dentures to be created.

Having said that, of course, we are not going to tell you that dentures don’t take a bit of getting used to. If you have had extractions, your gums will need time to shrink in order to make a proper fit possible. During this time, Dr. Schlesinger will provide you with temporary dentures. You’ll look good, and also have some time to get used to how dentures feel in your mouth. Once your permanent dentures come back from the lab where they are being manufactured, Dr. Schlesinger will fit them and line them for you, and you will have a set of fully functioning teeth, the most important benefit! Once you have you dentures, make sure you are following instructed aftercare to preserve them correctly.

Types of Dentures

denturesYou are probably most familiar with full dentures. However, if you are only missing a few teeth, implant-supported dentures could be an option – they are less expensive than full implants. If a few teeth are missing in sequence, a partial denture can work to fill in the gap. Additionally, if you have teeth that are generally in poor condition, you are missing some already and you anticipate that you will lose more in the near future, you could wear transitional partial dentures until you finally need full dentures.
