Dental crowns are a restorative dentistry treatment that is used to fix broken or otherwise damaged teeth. Actually, the term “crown” is not fully accurate because crowns as you think of them in terms of ornaments worn by kings and queens are open at the top. A dental crown is more like a helmet, because it covers your entire tooth.
Of course, terminology does not really matter. All you need to know is that a dental crown protects a damaged tooth and also restores its appearance.
To install dental crowns, first your dentist scrapes away any decayed areas, and then creates impressions of your mouth. These impressions are delivered to a lab where your crowns are made. When they come back, the dentist prepares your tooth a little more, checks out the crowns to be sure that the color is right, and then anchors the crowns using a special cement.
Dental crowns can serve both a restorative and a cosmetic purpose. Not only do they give you back the ability to chew and bite properly, they make your teeth look more beautiful. Issues like chips, cracks or discoloration can be corrected by means of dental crowns.
Crowns are indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth, because they are made using dental porcelain. This is the material that most resembles real teeth in terms of luminosity, translucency and color. So, unless you choose to tell people that you have had a restorative dentistry treatment, there is no reason why they have to know.
